In Maths this week, we have been getting to grips with converting between improper and mixed fractions. We soon got the hang of it and the equipment we used helped us understand the process. We are very excited to have finished our twisted fairy tales in English, with many characters meeting a sticky end! We worked well in our lesson leaning about the Vikings, where we evaluated different historical accounts. We had to think who might have written it and their purpose. We finished the week with art where we are studying the work of David Hockney. On Friday, we experimented mixing primary colours to see what secondary and tertiary colours we could make. To think of our well being and find strategies for dealing with our emotions, we had a yoga session in the class. We learn that it can actually encourage our brain to rewire, changing the way we feel. Interesting stuff!

We have been working hard and had a visit from Sven the Viking.......(Mrs Nunn) to find out information about the Viking longships. We have finally finished our mixed media final space art pieces and they have been a great success. In maths, we have been recapping our knowledge of fractions from previous years and using different ways of finding equivalent fractions. The children are finding their times tables knowledge very useful! In R.E, they became reporters interviewing people on the birth of Jesus. Much fun was had by all.

It is finally the end of a very busy, very long half term. This week, the children have enjoyed National week, with our special focus of Lindisfarne. Cooking the Pan Haggerty was a complete success with the children asking if the recipe could be on the website so they can make it in half term. Parents be warned! Part of the week was looking at the rule of Law, exploring a game played with and without rules. Everyone agreed that the experience was much better with rules in place. We finished our week with some wonderful watercolours of the monastery on Holy Island which were very effective. Have a great half term.

This has been a hectic week but the children have coped well. We are building towards our final art piece and getting our foreground ready. Year 5 concentrated hard on their sketching skills and have some impressive work ready to add to their space backgrounds next week. We have also been practising our multiples and identifying factors this week.

Year 5 showed great community spirit with a great contribution to the harvest festival. I could see that they were very proud of how long the line was with their items. We did so well and made second place. We have finished our maths block and will be moving onto multiplication and division next. We finally managed to do our science experiment today as, at last, we had sunshine. The children loved investigating what happened to the shadows through the day.
04.10.24
Finally, the sun came out giving us the opportunity for some outdoor learning. This week, in science, we acted out the movement of the Earth around the sun and the moon around the Earth. A lot of our moons had a hard job keeping up with the Earth! We are making great progress with our science based art topic. We have practised using blending techniques to make planets and we have used chalk and oil pastels to create our own nebulas. We tried some different skills to create the stars in the background which the children loved. They were very proud of their efforts.

We have had fun this week really thinking as scientists. We researched and evaluated evidence to support theories of a flat Earth and a spherical Earth. This gave us the opportunity to work in teams and present our information in an interesting way for others. We have been busy consolidating our place value knowledge up numbers up to 1,000,000 and applying to them to number lines. The week finished with a great art lesson looking at creating different tones to enhance our skills in our art topic Retro-Futurism. A real pleasure has been seeing the children already making progress with their swimming lessons.
12th September
We have hit the ground running in year 5. The children are excited to learn about the Saxons and had to use their deep thinking skills to assess possible reasons for them to come to Britain. Kensuke's Kingdom is proving a hit in English and we are working towards a persuasive letter to Michael's family to tell them whether to go on the adventure or not. In maths we are recapping our place value knowledge and practising saying very large numbers! This week the children have also enjoyed researching about a planet and creating a factfile. So as you can see, we have had a busy start!
